Understanding Culture and Drives for a Successful Team

Gaining Insight into Culture and Motivators for a Successful Team

With the Teamscan, you can quickly and effectively gain insight into the culture of your team or organisation. The Teamscan empowers teams by shedding light on both their motivators and culture, enabling targeted efforts to improve the organisational culture. These insights lead not only to better collaboration but also foster greater engagement and productivity.

What is the Teamscan?

The Teamscan is a valuable addition to the Management Drives software, providing a detailed look at how team members perceive the culture within their team or organisation. The Teamscan is divided into three main parts:

  1. Open Questions: The first part consists of two open questions—“What makes us a good team?” and “What could make our team better?”
  2. Behavioural Focus: The second part identifies the types of behaviours in which team members wish to invest.
  3. Cultural Analysis (Culture scan): The third part delves into the team’s perceived culture, using a questionnaire where respondents assess their experience of the team culture across six dimensions. This isn’t about how the culture “should” be but rather how it is genuinely experienced by team members. These insights help teams to identify areas needing more or less focus, what is working well, and where conflicting experiences may exist. Completing the survey takes around five minutes.

How Does the Culture Scan Work?

The Culture scan involves six questions, each assessing a different aspect of team culture, linked to the six colours of Management Drives. Each respondent rates these on a scale from – – to + +. The questions cover the following areas:

  • Yellow: How do we handle ideas and innovation?
  • Green: How do we interact with each other?
  • Orange: How performance-driven are we?
  • Blue: How structured and organised are we?
  • Red: How decisive and action-oriented are we?
  • Purple: How strong is our sense of connection?

Understanding the Culture Scan Results

The Culture scan reveals how each team member experiences the team culture:

  • A score of 0 indicates a balanced experience of a certain aspect of the culture, suggesting this should be maintained.
  • A negative score (– – or –) shows that there’s insufficient focus on that aspect, suggesting more attention is needed.
  • A positive score (+ or ++) suggests too much emphasis on that aspect, recommending less focus.
  • A question mark (?) reflects mixed experiences within the team; some members feel there is ample focus on a particular aspect, while others feel it’s lacking.
  • A blind spot occurs when the score is 0 in the cultural graph, yet the team does not actively focus on this area. The team may assume this aspect is balanced, but it is not.

Example of a Culture Scan

The culture scan can be run at any time, making it ideal for tracking team development over time. After an MD session, for instance, teams can apply their new insights and see if these efforts result in improved culture scan scores.
